June 12, 2025: SFEB Potluck “Getting Scrappy”

Did you know that food scraps and food-soiled paper are the largest single item in our waste stream? These items make up approximately 35% of what we throw away in Alameda County. These numbers may shock you, but change starts with you, and small shifts in how we approach shopping for, preparing, storing, and eating food can make a big difference!

Our theme for June’s potluck was “Getting Scrappy.” Maybe it was making veggie broth from frozen scraps, carrot top pesto, pickled watermelon rind, or croutons from day-old bread — people got creative with those items that might have typically ended up in the compost.

We gathered for an evening of community connection and conversation over a shared potluck meal with special guest Jeannie Pham of StopWaste, a public agency that worked to reduce waste in Alameda County!
