October 11th, 2025: Volunteer Work Day @ Planting Justice
This was the Slow Food community’s opportunity to support Planting Justice by spending a day volunteering at the “Mother Farm” in El Sobrante! The leaders for the day shared the processes and practices they use to ensure strong healthy soil and extraordinary diversity, discussing everything from permaculture principles to Integrated Pest Management and Cover Cropping.
As a group, we toured the farm and then dove into work — weeding, planting, turning the soil — as we learned about the practices they use to create a vibrant growing ecosystem with respect for the land, the insects, the soil and the water. In the middle of the day, we took a break for some nourishment (BYO lunch) and a deeper discussion of Planting Justice’s work before heading back to the fields.
It was a day of skills building and knowledge expansion all while supporting the incredible work Planting Justice does to empower people impacted by mass incarceration and social inequities with the skills and resources to cultivate food sovereignty, economic justice, and community healing.
