October 9th, 2025: SFEB Potluck: “Climate Resilience Agriculture, or, WTF is Carbon Farming?”

For our last few potlucks, we’ve focused on minimizing wasted food as a way to fight climate change. This time we zoomed out - WAY out - and talked about farming and the soil.

Maybe you’ve heard the term ‘carbon farming’? And maybe you think you should know about it but honestly aren’t truly sure what it means in practice… How exactly do we ‘capture carbon,’ and why? Is it the same as ‘climate resilient agriculture’? And is it something that only happens at the large farm level, or can it be something we consider in our back yards or deck garden boxes too?

Our guest and lead guide for the evening was Sarah Skinker. As the Carbon Farming Program Manager with Marin Resource Conservation District (Marin RCD), Sarah manages the funding, design and implementation of stewardship projects on working lands in Marin County. Many of these projects are focused on carbon sequestration, and the Marin RCD team provides assistance to farmers and ranchers that address a wide variety of issues associated with agricultural viability and climate resilience. Sarah shared the role of the RCD in the climate & agricultural space, and how this is evolving with new challenges and opportunities.

Attendees brought dishes that represented this shoulder season — the last of the tomatoes, the start of winter squash, it's a fun time to create a mishmash of all the delicious things atthe market!
