October 9th: SFEB Potluck: “Climate Resilience Agriculture, or, WTF is Carbon Farming?”

Sign up: https://forms.gle/nokodbunVN4v8G2i9

Date: October 9th

Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm

Location: West Berkeley backyard (address to be shared upon RSVP)

For our last few potlucks,, we’ve focused on minimizing wasted food as a way to fight climate change. Now we’re going to zoom out - WAY out - and talk about farming and the soil.

Maybe you’ve heard the term ‘carbon farming’? And maybe you think you should know about it but honestly aren’t truly sure what it means in practice? How exactly do we ‘capture carbon’ and why? Is it the same as ‘climate resilient agriculture’? And is it something that only happens at the large farm level, or can it be something we consider in our back yards or deck garden boxes too?

Bring a dish that represents this shoulder season - the last of the tomatoes? Or the start of the winter squash? What a fun time to create a mishmash of all the delicious things at the market!

Our guest and lead guide for the evening is Sarah Skinker. As the Carbon Farming Program Manager with Marin Resource Conservation District (Marin RCD), Sarah manages the funding, design and implementation of stewardship projects on working lands in Marin County. Many of these projects are focused on carbon sequestration, and the Marin RCD team provides assistance to farmers and ranchers that address a wide variety of issues associated with agricultural viability and climate resilience. Sarah will share the role of the RCD in the climate & agricultural space, and how this is evolving with new challenges and opportunities.

Please invite friends who may have never heard of Slow Food before, we'd love to meet them!

Confirmations will be sent out five days before the gathering and more details about location and dish preparations will be included. Full potluck guidelines here. NOTE: We will be outdoors, so please plan for the normal evening Bay area temps.

If you need to cancel, please do so at least 36 hours in advance of the gathering so we have time to find someone to take your place. This is a small event (20 people!) with limited seats, so every single one of you counts! (Of course, if you have an exposure to Covid or aren't feeling well, last minute cancellations are absolutely appropriate.)
